I've owned a 2011 Edge since 2011 and when the weather is cold (below 20 degrees) I get a message on my in touch screen that the battery saver system has malfunctioned, restart your engine and turn the ignition off. Doing this gets the same result and I get the battery saver system has malfunctioned again.

This is not just a Ford problem, most modern cars with so-called "smart" charging systems for emissions reasons suffer in the same way. As an example there is a massive thread on the Toyota owners forum on exactly the same issue and the answer, I'm afraid, is the same - buy and regularly use a charger such as those recommended in the thread above.
